We've been coming to the Eltermere for 15 years or thereabouts. This visit, for a couple of drizzly days in January was as lovely as ever. The location couldn't be bettered for walking, with absolutely glorious walks from the door in every direction. The rooms range from cosy to luxurious, and the service is always quiet and attentive. Finally, the food is excellent. We choose to eat dinner in the bar, for it's warm, rustic atmosphere, but the dining room is perfect for those with tastes for elegance.

The staff were helpful and accommodating the hotel was clean and well maintained the bar wasn’t so well stocked and I was disappointed that the open fires that were shown on the website were not all lit it was New Year’s Eve and very cold out so was looking forward to the fires great place to stay if you like walking on the fells

Had a nice few days. Room had no heating as there was a problem and a small heater was provided, which was ‘ok’ but did not heat enough. Breakfast was lovely and covered in cost of the stay, evening meal was average and overpriced. Hotel itself is beautiful but fires were not all lit so did not provide the cosy feel. Staff were friendly, especially a lady in particular who was there morning till night. Local pub 2 minutes away. Great walks

An excellent meal headlined by the rabbit terrine. The trout was also very good for a small local restaurant. This hotel epitomises what we should support - independent hotels with great food and good wine. A gem in the heart of the Lake District

Another excellent Sunday lunch, our second visit. Local meat with fresh veg all perfectly cooked. Really lovely staff.

Having had the most wonderful Sunday roast dinners two weeks earlier we couldn’t wait for a return visit. However, we were disappointed on the second visit regarding the service level. First time we had a jug of tap water on the table, this time we were offered still or sparkling for which we were charged £4.75 for a bottle of still. The first visit we had plenty of gravy, this time we had a small amount in the Yorkshire pudding which clearly wasn’t enough for the meat and large amount of greens. We asked for more and were given a small jug which we were charged a surprising £2.50 for! We queried this and was told it was on the menu but my husband pointed out that had we had enough in the first place we wouldn’t have needed more, gravy is literally pennies to make. I make these comments out of principle and not for any financial reason. Being local we thought we had found a place to visit regularly and had recommended it to our friends but now we will think twice.

Excellent room on the ground floor, food provided at evening was freshly prepared and could not be faulted. Room cleaned to a high standard.

Have given five stars because the food, staff and environment deserve it. We went for Sunday lunch and had the lamb and beef, both accompanied by the most delicious and mixed variety of vegetables. I usually pass most of my veg to my husband but I ate them all! Great Yorkshire pudding, lovely gravy (red wine jus) and the mint sauce was obviously homemade. The duck spring rolls we had for starters were absolutely yummy, best ones I’ve ever had. Found enough room for the delicious and superbly presented sticky toffee pudding which had pieces of cinder toffee around it. We will definitely be back! Full credit to the management.

Four of us went for dinner and we all had 3 courses. The food was delicious. We had roast lamb and beef for dinner. Huge plateful of delicious traditional roast. We loved the desserts too - great sticky toffee pudding. This hotel is very warm and friendly. The staff are wonderful. It is in an amazing location.

I stayed here for two nights and enjoyed it. The room was just right, the grounds are lovely, it’s peaceful although there are some exotic peacocks wandering around. The breakfast was really good. I had smoked salmon and scrambled egg all morning and an eggs Benedict on the other Service was good too. Can’t think of any downside to this place. It’s convenient for lots of places to visit in the lakes my room was called hen crag.
