This was the perfect place for my husband and I to rest after a long journey from Chicago. The property is beautiful and serene yet close to most tourist spots in Nairobi. We loved the breakfast each morning and the various animals that lived at the hotel. Perfect spot to start or end your vacation in Kenya!
Beautiful place to stay. Rooms, food, staff all amazing. Great location. Snuggles from the house pets were a bonus, thanks Uki, Max and White Diamond! Thank you Joanne for keeping me entertained at the bar and all staff for making this stay super special.
We stayed at Karen Gables for 2 nights after our arrival into Nairobi for our honeymoon. We arrived late but had a welcome greeting from the team. The team were very hospitable, serving us a delicious breakfast and dinner. Joanne is especially good at making cocktails and we enjoyed some sitting around the pool one afternoon. The setting is gorgeous, amongst the trees and amazing to hear all of the calls from the local birds.
What a great place to stay. The staff are extremely welcoming, attentive, service-oriented, friendly and happy. It's a really homely place to stay. The food is good. Loved our lengthly, interesting conversations with the owner. Highly recommend. Thank you Team Karen Gables, Lisa, Craig, Mike & Jacqui (New Zealand) :)
Very beautiful, homely and calm place to start our trip to Kenya. Great service and delicious food. Set in tranquil grounds in a quiet area, just a walk away to Karen Blixen museum and also a great craft centre on the way.
We were lucky to stay at the Karen Gables house before leaving for our safari. The house has so much character and is decorated beautifully. The grounds and pool were fantastic and the dogs were a bonus. This was the perfect place to stay while we enjoyed the sights of Nairobi before heading out on safari. We had the opportunity to chat with the owner and he was just lovely.
The property is lovely and in a great location in Karen. It is a nice setting to spend time on the grounds, with many lovely seating areas all over the beautiful property. The rooms were nice, but pretty varied in size so it matters which you get. Unfortunately we only had hot water for about 40% of our showers, which impacted our experience. We thought the food was very good (we had a dinner our first night and breakfast each morning), but the service was a bit odd ( i.e. the dinner server discouraging from ordering certain items of the menu provided to make it easier for the chef, telling us to sit at different seats at the table to make it easier for the server), they also didn't have avocado toast available for breakfast any days, although it was on the menu. These are not really major issues, it is a beautiful place in a great location. We found the bartender (anne?) to be lovely and overall the place is nice. 3 stars instead of 4 stars was really due to the hot water issue, which I mentioned to the owner as we checked out and he did not seem very concerned or apologetic.
Karen Gables, out from the city center in the forested suburbs of Nairobi, is a wonderful old-world-look Cape Dutch home turned guest house. Before departing with Orphan Trail Safaris to visit the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust camps we spent two-nights here…and it was just what we needed after more than 24 hours flight time from Dallas to Nairobi. We were made to feel welcomed immediately and through the rest of our stay by William…the majordomo and the rest of the staff. William was always there to be sure we were comfortable and that our needs were taken care of. The home is gracious and filled with things of Africa and beyond, over-stuffed furnishings beckoning to sink into and relax. Stacks of books and photos galore of old family members and new. The rooms are comfortable and mosquito netted at night. No feel of a hotel here…we felt as we were guest of old friends. Dining was out of this world…sumptuous breakfasts with everything from muesli, French toast, pancakes, all sorts of eggs with sausage and bacon and lovely plates filled with fresh fruit. Dinner at the large table was and an exceptional meal with outstanding service and gourmet dishes. I never did meet the chef but I can assure you this…he is a rare talent. Walking through the house to the exterior there is an inviting patio with the most unbelievable view. The yard slopes down and down to a forest with a clearing right in the middle where your eye is immediately drawn past tropical shrubbery and flowering plants to tall trees in the distance. A pool to the left with bar and patio summons you for a drink or a swim…but we walk further and noticed a winding path taking you down the slope past an open library room set up for reading or a game. Continuing on is a tropical pond filled with koi. Finally at the bottom of the forest is an opening in a stand of bamboo with seating. This five minute trip along this sloping trail helped the tension of modern day travel slip away and become replaced by a deep state of relaxation. Yes, the perfect place to start/finish safari…or to escape for a respite for weekend or week. We hated to say goodbye. PS...yes there are some monkeys who entertain you with their capers on the lawn
