Clean, friendly staff. The housing is in a variety of little huts, we had the apartment which had its own shower and nice open space. In the end we spent most of our time outside, under the covered huts around the pool because it rained a tonne. Well stocked communal kitchen, clean, access to rental surf boards, short walk with boat crossing to Tamarindo (if you want to go for a visit but don’t need the hustle and bustle). The area is very quiet but there are restaurants. The one connected to the hotel is awesome - great food and value.

Amazing hostel and restaurant staff. Places to eat were all very close. Yoga in the mornings, a very short walk from the hostel. The beach, only a 2 minute walk. long and beautiful! Connects with Tamarindo. Clean. Surf instructors ready and eager to help. Outdoor kitchen has everything needed including a traditional coffee maker. Easy check in and check out. Taxi services to and from the airport as well as rental car options that can be set up right at the hostel. An overall great experience. March will be my 7th time back to this hostel in a year!

We had arrived next door believing to be booked. Not so. I had told Dawn our situation and she was more than accommodating. We stayed in the private treehouse and it was the best night's stay we had with ocean waves & winds helping us sleep. Everyone was super cool and their Cafe Mar Azul is a stellar restaurant with delicious food. Thanks again, Dawn and staff! From Mitch & Jan.

Booked a sunset cruise through Playa Grande Surf Camp and was blown away by the over-the-top customer service. We had made arrangements to be picked up at a spot near our VRBO by the tour company, but they didn't show due to a misunderstanding as to the pickup spot. We called Dawn (we didn't have the tour company's phone number), she contacted the tour company for us, and in five minutes picked us up and drove us to the correct pickup spot. If they do this for non-guests I can only imagine what they do for the people who stay there. These are people who care and will go to the extra effort of making your visit to Playa Grande special. Thank you Dawn. PS: The sunset tour was a highlight of our trip.

Playa Grande Surf Camp has it all. Surf, relax & sleep at this cozy hostel. Get away from all the hustle and bustle and relax by the pool, nap in a hammock or take a surf lesson with their awesome instructors. Dawn and her staff are very accommodating to any need you may have. They are very knowledgeable of the area as well as any tour or excursion you may want to take. Beach access is only a 2 minute walk up the pathway. You won’t want to miss the sunset. Don’t forget to grab a delicious smoothie for breakfast, quesadilla or ceviche for lunch, or a fresh fish special for dinner at the Cafe Mar Azul located on-site. Dinner reservations are necessary during busy season. Pura Vida

This place far exceeded our expectations, our first stop from the airport and such a great way to start our trip, i thought before that maybe the surfer atmosphere might be a little hostile (not sure why i had that impression) but the people we met there were so nice and interesting. Dawn was very helpful and professional, told me “no worries” after i lost the key to our place even though i was fully expecting to pay for the replacement. Surf instructors were also good. The restaurant attached to the camp serves good food although the drinks are a little pricey. Kitchen is very well kitted out too if you want to cook yourself. Overally great spot and one of the nicest beaches i have ever experienced.

Great experience with PGSC. Great communication throughout from trip planning to last session. This was our first surf vacation with our groms (I’m a beginner minus), and I knew we we were set up for success after my first interaction with Dawn. Our instructor was fantastic and was able to tailor instruction to our diverse group. Of course the location speaks for itself.

Excellent place for an authentic Costa Rica Pacific beach experience. We spent 9 days in CR at 6 different lodges ranging from $60 to $325/night and this was our favorite for the value. Well situated, clean, safe, friendly and Dawn was a terrific hostess. We could not be more pleased and we will return.

Such a welcoming, homely hostel. Staying at the Playa Grande Surf Camp was such a fab experience. Clean; helpful staff; good coffee; comfy bunk room; and great surf boards! Had an amazing time staying here. I will return!

The A-frame cabanas are exactly as pictured; very small, very clean, very simple, with very powerful & well-working AC. Exactly what we needed & wanted, no more, no less, at a fair price. To our delight and slight surprise, mattresses are very comfy, despite being very simple. And we are a bit picky with mattresses! Board rentals were easy & fast, with decent but small selection. Best of all, they were ready to help us rent from nearby Mato’s Surf Shop if we couldn’t find the right board w them. They really want guests to enjoy, not be stuck there, taking as much money from them as they can! They’re also helpful with local resto recommendations, tour & travel info, etc. We found the washrooms and all common areas always very clean. It seemed cleaners were in 1-2 x / day. Dawn, the GM was *exceptionally* helpful and friendly, as was everyone else. The vibe here was *amazing*, and we met new friends who we are in touch w to this day, hoping our paths cross again in the future. M & T: We miss you! Café Mar Azul, the resto attached, was one of the best restos we would find in all of Costa Rica over the next 2 weeks. It’s fantastic. The seared tuna, the fresh sea bass, and the ceviche are all some of the best we had in CR, and we ate at some very nice spots. It’s so luxurious being able to just pop in 5 – 10 meters from your cabana for a spectacular, reasonable priced dinner, and then go jump in the pool. Important: PGSC ***is a hostel, not a hotel***. This is *spectacularly* well done by PGSC, intentionally. The communal, social vibe, chill atmosphere, shared showers, shared central pool & kitchen, rental boards, etc, are part of what attracts travellers like us! If you’re unfamiliar with hostel travel / don’t dig this vibe / want a ‘check in, check out, staff never know your name’ type hotel, you might be happier elsewhere. [You can also keep to yourself, in your room, read quietly by the pool, etc, if you prefer, but it’s not the focus.] The very few legit negative reviews we saw are from people who just don’t dig hostels, which isn’t really fair to PGSC…or to yourself! : ) The break is about a 5-7 min walk from PGSC. Down the road about 2-3 mins, then along the beach. PGSC crew: ***Thank you*** !!!
