If you can work it into your budget and are staying in Portree... I highly recommend you consider Taransay House. There are only 4 rooms (8 guests) and you are treated like ROYALTY. Murdo greeted us with a dram of wisky and carried our bags up to our room. Beautiful room with a giant king sized bed, an enormous bathroom with a rain shower and soaking tub, a seprate area with a TV and chairs and a balcony overlooking the bay. The room had all we needed and was immaculate. While the cost is up there... the reservation includes dinner and breakfast. It was nice to know we didn't have to go out and find a place to eat. Also nice to be able to have a drink before dinner and wine with dinner and not have to worry about driving back to a hotel. We stayed for two nights. Murdo's son Scott is the chef and we were treated to some of the best food I have ever had while travelling. Hefty wine list for a small operation and 5 star food. Scott decides what culinary adventures you will have based on what is fresh in the market that day. Were were treated to many new flavor combinations and enjoyed every bite. Breakfast was also wonderful. On our second day, Murdo walked us through a suggested itinerary and gave us printed information to help plan the day. On the day we departed, we had to be on the road by 7am... Scott prepared a take-away breakfast for us. It was wonderful to feel so pampered. I highly recommend a stay at Taransay House!

Taransay House was the highlight of our trip to Scotland - well, okay, the countryside and people were also pretty fabulous - but Taransay House was exceptional. Murdo made us feel so welcome, like we were staying with friends. He offered tips and recommendations for touring locally, including finding us a private guide at the last minute when our plans fell through. Our room was large, and very comfortable, and well-stocked with every amenity we could ever want. Breakfast and dinner are included, and cooked by Scott, who is a talented chef; everything was delicious! We were sad to say goodbye.

Our stay at the Taransay House was absolutely wonderful! From the moment we arrived, we felt so welcome and cared for. Scott is an absolute star in the kitchen! Every meal he prepared was delicious, fresh, and full of flavor. You could tell how much love and attention went into everything he made. Murdo was just as fantastic. Every morning he checked the weather and gave us excellent recommendations on what we should see and do that day based on that. He also told us more about the hikes we wanted to do and what to expect. His tips helped us make the most of our trip and we discovered so many gems we might have otherwise missed. Rooms are large, extremely clean, bed and pillows are very comfortable and the bathroom makes me feel like I am at the spa! You also have a sitting area where you can read or drink your coffee/tea and enjoy the wonderful views! Murdo and Scott genuinely care about their guests and went above and beyond to make sure we had a fantastic time. The warm hospitality here makes you feel like you’re right at home. My husband and I have travelled a lot and this is by far my favorite experience we've had! We can’t wait to come back! I highly recommend it! Everyone needs to have an experience like this at least once in their life!

If you visit the Isle of Skye, stay at Taransay House! This place was by far the best place we stayed in all of Scotland! It was very small and quaint, but fantastic. The owner is charming, and his son is the most amazing chef. You will have an unbelievable breakfast and dinner made for you each day you are there! Rooms are very comfortable and have a beautiful view of the bay. It is somewhat pricey, but so worth every penny! Wish I could give it more stars because they deserve it!

Exquisite experience in the magical Isle of Skye. We spend three days with our hosts in Taransay House, who offered us a most memorable stay in Portree. When staying here, yo not get only an accomodation, but also an amazing culinary journey and a lot o stories and guidance offered by your hosts, to make you days of exploration on Slye more customized and worthwhile. Murdo's kindness is unforgetabble to us.He effortlessly made us comdtable in every way possible. Scott is an amazing chef, his passion for authentic, fresh, meaningful cuisine was a real highlight of our journey thorugh Scotland. We really appreciated him making time to explaining the dishes with us, his stories and all the suggestions he shared for the rest of our journey. A gem of Scotland, pour stay in Taransay House.

This has to be the best place to stay in Skye. Our room was large and so was the bathroom. We had an outside seating area to enjoy the lovely view. Even better than that was our host, Murdo. Before we arrived, he sent us an itinerary for our drive from Inverness. We saw some beautiful waterfalls that we would have otherwise missed. He was there to welcome us when we arrived. Each day he gave us suggestions for places to visit and some to avoid. He could not have been more helpful. The food here is amazing! Scott really has a gift. Everything was delicious and beautifully presented. By far, the best food we had on our trip. Taransay is not a budget stay but it is worth it for the quality of the house, the hospitality, and the food. I would highly recommend.

Murdo (father) Scott (son & chef) hands down the best!!!! Murdo would create a day for us daily based on weather etc. He even mapped out scenic stops from Portree to Edinburg. The food-well 5 star top quality breakfast & dinner. Look no further I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

My husband and our 2 adult sons stayed at the Taransay House for 2 nights. The location is nice and about 10 minutes walking distance to town. There are only 4 rooms in this beautiful house, 2 downstairs and 2 upstairs. All the rooms have beautiful views. We stayed in the 2 rooms downstairs. We like being able to walk out from our rooms to the large patio/backyard. The 2 rooms upstairs have a small private balcony. Our rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable. Murdo the host and his son Scott the chef are the most wonderful people. Murdo will do everything to make sure our stay was enjoyable. We wanted to do some?hiking. Murdo told?us about?a local trail (not known to tourist), gave us instructions and drove us to the trailhead of the beautiful hike. Scott is a great chef and would source the freshest local ingredients. Scott will accommodate special requests the best he can. We felt we had a personal chef for breakfast and dinner. We ate way too much good food. The rooms are great value given how nice the house/rooms are and with the delicious multi course breakfast/dinner included.

Stop looking. This is the place. Story time: we had a travel snafu after we left this gem of a place and talked with a couple who had stayed elsewhere and they complained the trails were too busy (not for us since Murdo made us custom plans, he was checking the WIND forecast guys). Dinner places were booked (not for us, Scott absolutely spoiled us) they didn't find any places that weren't overrun (we did, again because of this excellent duo). It made our entire stay in Skye an amazing experience because of the service here. This was the highlight of our vacation, and I saw a humpback whale breach for the first time in my life in Iceland. This was even better than that. If you're a regular person wondering if you should splash out for this place? Yes. You should. You won't regret it.
