We stayed for two nights in the hotel to celebrate a special occassion with our daughter and her family. The staff were amazing and friendly, from check in to check out. We had great rooms which were very spacious and clean. Breakfast and service were excellent. They even accommodated us on our last night with a decorated entrance to one of the dining rooms to celebrate when we returned. We all agreed that the restaurant/bar food was excellent and the badger bar also had a really great range of drinks. Overall 10/10, thank you from us to the staff for making those two days in Rydal so memorable. We will most definitely return.

Lovely place. Perfect location. Rooms are full of character and if you’re looking for modern, then you’re in the wrong place. We stayed in the family room. Four poster bed and two singles. Beds comfortable. Had a funky smell in the room but took it as it’s old and full of character so may have been the old furnishings. Bathroom was modern and clean. Fresh towels.. However mid shower and shampoo in my hair, the water literally stopped. I’m assuming a few other guests were using the water and may have been the reason for this, but it’s not acceptable. I had to wrap up and wait to rinse the shampoo out later on which delayed our evening plans. Staff lovely and friendly. Breakfast was awful. From start to finish. Arrived at 9.20. Seated and noted only two other small family’s dining with us. Noted Table set but food from previous guest in floor. Waited almost five mins for someone to inform us that the drinks and cereal were around the corner and self serve. She then asked if we wanted any hot drinks.. They came back five minutes later to take our food order with my hot drink. I explained we had some allergens and that they had been notified on booking and the day we arrived. We ordered hash browns with beans for my daughter. My other daughter asked for beans on toast and I asked for the veggie breakfast without the sausage. 10.10 our food arrived. We waited thirty minutes for one greasy fried hash brown on a plate with a small pot of beans. My other daughter’s meal arrived. One piece of bread toasted on one side with another small pot of beans. The Last plate was mine. One greasy hash brown. A tomato. And a pot of beans. When I asked where the gluten free toast was they said they would fetch some. After five minutes, they arrived with one piece of toast and a random hash brown, the toast again only toasted on one side the other side soggy. Speechless at the time. No sign of staff to ask if everything was ok with our meals. Nothing. Some got up and left. Shocked not only with the quality of food but also with the length of time it took to ‘cook’ it. It was my little girls birthday that day and she was excited for a lovely birthday breakfast before our walk. Clearly she was disappointed.

Amazing place. This is the only place we ever stay at now in the lakes. Been coming here for years. Stunning location . Right opposite Rydal lake. Beautiful rooms. We always stay in the 2 huge rooms at the front when we go overlooking the lake. Always spotless, the cleaners do an amazing job. The bar staff are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Food is delicious . You can have bar snacks during day and a lovely meal in the evening. Breakfast is great too. Lovely old building. Next to Wordsworth house. Well worth a visit. Rydal hall is next door which has beautiful walks . Highly recommend anyone staying here. You won't be disappointed

The cottage we stayed in was full of character and very cosy, the bed was very comfy with stunning views and situated on the edge of woodland therefore we could hear owls at night which we loved! The bar and hotel area are full of charm and character and the staff are friendly, we loved drinking in the bar and sitting by the log fire and then withdrawing to the chilled lounge area. The Breakfast was very good also. The highlight for sure was my first encounter with a Badger, I was sat only 12 feet away whilst it eate from the feeding station at 3AM, it was an unforgettable experience! Hotel has a large private car park, it's only a mile and a half walk to Ambleside and in a rural setting with great views and walks, a great escape away from the hustle and bustle and pretentious areas in lakes

Fantastic last minute stay in glenrothes cottage herron room for solo travellers.offers plenty of space for one with a good shower, the main building is beautiful 17th century Inn with panelled walls great atmosphere bar and dinning room.I had roast beef dinner which was truly excellent! The cumbrian breakfast also top notch I was full all day really high quality ingredients in both meals .Paul's team of staff were extremely lovely attentive efficient friendly and really did their jobs to a high standard well done all that includes chef s and housekeeping too. There's loads to do here from the doorstep and is so near other villages in a short drive I love this area.

A fabulous stay, super comfy beds, spotlessly clean, warm & cosy room.. Bar & restaurant lovely, real fires, bursting with character features, friendly staff, good range of drinks…. And the food is - incredible… Home cooked, huge portions & the best medium-rare steak we’ve had in a very long time - perfectly cooked. We’re actually quite fussy - and this is an absolute gem - it’s definitely gone into our top 5 short breaks list.

Stayed at the Glen Rothay Hotel (Badger Bar) in Rydal towards the end of September 2025. I booked the Buttermere room for three nights, and although this room did not have much of a view from its window, the room itself was excellent. Warm, clean, quiet, with good bathroom facilities. Staff were always approachable and professional and courteous in a non-too-formal way, even when it became busy such as on saturday when people came down off Loughrigg and called in to have a drink and a meal. Glen Rothay caters to non-residents as well as residents, so its best to book a table in advance. All-in-all, my experience at the Glen Rothay was a positive and enjoyable one, and I have no hesitation in recommending a stay there. Even managed to capture a real live wild badger on my Iphone whilst it was feeding.

What a treat to step back in time and be treated like family! We stayed in the Rydal Suite, spacious and beautifully decorated. A huge bathroom and hot shower and delicious deep tub! The executive housekeeper did all she could to supply all we could need, clean and detailed amenities. We ate at the dining room on several occasions, breakfast was great, Henry was attentive and funny, no request was too hard and all done with a smile and a laugh, thanks Henry! Loved seeing the Badgers, and refreshing to enjoy free access to such a unique experience. We would LOVE to return to Glen Rothay, thank you.

Another brilliant stay. Warm welcome. Stayed in Loughrigg which is our fav room, perfect for the two of us. Staff great as always, helpful and attentive. Always think its good to get to know the staff so well done all of you, Kit, Donna, Belle and Will and Henry who did a great job at breakfast. Others on holiday so will catch up with them on our next visit as we try to stay every month. Food great (thanks Lenny, Belle and Mathew) . See you all shortly

Brilliant stay again. Went up for husbands 70th birthday. Thanks to staff, especially Luke and Tiffany for the balloons and presi. Great night all round. Stayed in Loughrigg (as usual), our favourite room-just right size for 2. Food very good, great breakfast every morning. Thanks also to Eleonor and Lenny for the morning coffee and sausage butties on arrival. All staff really friendly and helpful and we are lookinf forward to our next visit.
