This is a truthful and personal review. We were initial show to a room that was very tired, dark and in a very bad way. It felt very neglected and in desperate need of a handyman, painter and better lighting. We complained and were quickly moved to another room, which also needed a handyman but was in a better state, sleep quality was good, big comfortable bed. The staff were amazing and were very quick to see to your needs. The meal was disappointingly poor for a large hotel, it was hot but poor quality. The bar area was very small and quickly filleed up, we had to sit in the dining room with our drinks, these were slightly expensive but as expected for a hotel. There is a large car park, Rydal Water just over the road, so an ideal position. Verdict: We would not stay here again. A pity just a bit more attention to details would make this a nice hotel. Some clever photography shown, but don't be decived, photographs do lie.

This is a great place to stay and was our second time. The rooms are big with nice on-suites. Full restaurant and bar with friendly staff and included breakfast. Hiking trails are across the street, we went up to Rydal Cave. Don’t forget to watch the badgers!

I bought my American friend here for a few nights and we both really enjoyed our stay at this hotel and the Lake’s in general. Our twin room was small, but lovely and the bathroom was large. Breakfast was great and dinner was delicious too. We did sit and watch their badgers one night which was a real treat and I’m so glad we waited for them. There’s an easy walk to Rydal Water and the caves on the hillside. We walked down to the bus stop to use the local buses to get around. Saved the bother of traffic in the park during the summer. A lovely hotel I’d stay here again for the ambience and badgers.

We found this hotel at the last minute as the hotel we were staying in was precipitately closed because of health and safety concerns. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. We were given a very comfortable room on the ground floor. The heating needed to be supplemented by a portable electric heater which did the job in keeping the room warm, although we did have to endure a cold bathroom. The bar area was very cosy and we enjoyed a good meal. The home made pie (described as not just stew with a pastry crust) was very good. The cooked breakfast was ok, the room where it was served a little chilly, but made up for by the warmth of the staff.

Had a lovely stay for one night in the recent freezing weather conditions. Had to rearrange as we were snowed in at home and the manager was happy to rebook and even offered to upgrade us to a bigger room as they were particularly quiet. Our plans to walk into Grasmere had to be changed as the conditions meant that footpaths were very icy and made walking much slower than normal. We were given an extra radiator in the room and to be honest it was still a little chilly. (Have just read other reviews suggesting that the extra heater in the rooms is a common theme, suggesting that there is an issue heating this very large old property - and although our room upgrade was a lovely touch - maybe it was easier to book us into the main building?) The huge bathroom looked amazing, but the plumbing obviously struggled to cope with providing constant hot water for the shower. The bathroom was also quite chilly. We ate in the bar in the evening - good tasty food. Breakfast was also good. We have stayed here for time to time over a number of years as we love the location, but the place could do with better attention to detail if it wants to be a quality hotel.

This 15th century inn has style, both in architecture and indeed, its furnishings. The staff were friendly, helpful and professional. The inn’s situation is absolutely ideal for tourists, hikers, anyone. The menu was a little limited, but it was January, with relatively few customers. The chicken curry was excellent. Fish goujons starter very tasty and succulent. Read the instructions before using the shower, and you’ll be alright. We thought our room rather cold mornings, but someone else felt the place was too warm. Maybe it was just right. For 40 years I have stayed in a hotel on Windermere. It has recently been refurbished, the prices doubled, and the reviews indifferent. So I’ve looked for somewhere else, and Glen Rothay has ticked many boxes, and at a fraction of the cost of previous unnamed hotel. Would we stay here again? The answer is Yes. Beautiful room, lovely staff, good food, comfortable bed, brilliant situation.
