We were the first visitors here since the flooding and all the damage this has sadly caused which they are busily trying to rectify. It was recommended to us by a friend who stayed there many years ago. It is a most beautiful, tranquil place where you are surrounded by nature and wildlife. We stayed for 2 nights in the 1st floor eco lodge which was spacious and comfortable. Muna cooked us delicious meals using locally sourced ingredients which were so tasty. He also arranged for us to have a jeep and driver for a safari into Yala National Park and visit the ancient Rock temple Sithulpawwa. It is one of the highlights of our Sri Lanka travels.
For nature lovers, this is the best. The atmosphere and rooms are comfortable and tasteful, away from the traffic of Kataragama but close to it and the Yala Park. Carla and Muna are very welcoming and friendly (an added bonus for us Italians: Carla speaks our language perfectly). They also gave us helpful tips for enriching our visit to Sri Lanka. Muna's cuisine is excellent and original, taking a traditional approach. If you're looking for a safari in Yala Park, look no further than these: the variety is extensive, and the guide provides geological and botanical details. For the dry season, installing a ceiling fan is recommended.
We loved our stay at this beautiful eco-lodge! The hotel itself is amazing, all in wood and in the middle of the forest with monkeys greeting you. The family room was clean and spacious with good fans (no air con). The food was delicious. We had a swim in the river and enjoyed the quietness and the wildlife. We had an amazing safari in Yala with a great driver: spotted 3 leopards! we also visited the sacred city of Katagarama and had an amazing experience being almost the only tourists there. Overall we highly recommend this lodge if you want an experience close to nature with home made food, lovely hosts and quiet peaceful vibes.
If you are looking for the alternative accom experience Gem River Eco is the place for you. The guesthouse and lodge is built from recycled natural materials in an organic and artistic style. The river rolls past gently and you might see elephants or crocodiles. Our cottage had two bedrooms with fan and mosquito nets and large bathroom. Meals were home cooked and fabulous, served in the atmospheric dining area, cool lighting and chilled music in the evening. Our host was easy going and friendly. He organised our safari with a couple of added extras. We loved it!
Endroit très sympa dans la nature, on aurait envie d’y revenir faire une retraite. Nous ne sommes restés qu’une nuit dans une chambre familiale, écologique et confortable. Le rice and curry (végé et bio) cuisiné par notre h?te est le meilleur que nous ayons mangé durant les 3 semaines au Sri Lanka. Merci beaucoup pour ces doux moments !
This place offers a very different, one of a kind experience thats includes a wide variety of various things to do & places to explore. Most of the hotel is built with natural raw materials which gives it a very calm, welcoming vibe & the feeling of a nature retreat. The backyard of the hotel ends with a very famous gem river that is quite beautiful to experience aswell, along with other beautiful places to chill and swim. There is also the option of wildlife safari and camping that can be arranged aswell. Leopard safari also can be organised upon request & many other various fun & rewarding experiences & nature activities.
Eco home è un nome perfetto per il Gem River… sembra di essere a casa ma siamo in mezzo alla giungla. La camera con il soppalco è bellissima, la quadrupla spaziosa e ben organizzata. E poi c’è la cucina vegetariana di Carla e Muna, i due proprietari. Buonissima e mai uguale… apprezzata anche dai bambini! Ottima base per il Safari allo Yala e per immergersi nell’atmosfera mistica dei templi di Kataragama. Ma anche semplicemente per rilassarsi tra le amache e una tazza di the. La gentilezza delle persone e l’autenticità del luogo fanno assolutamente la differenza. Consigliato!
Bellissimo posto in mezzo alla giungla con fiume accanto e amache per rilassarsi, è presente anche un area comune dove prendere il tè. Il ristorante offre abbondanti pasti di cucina vegetariana in parte della casa; personale gentilissimo e molto accogliente. Fantastico per andare poi allo Yala Safari
Un vrai cabinet des curiosités perdu dans la jungle. Carla a créé un espace unique de détente. Elle a aussi un vrai talent pour la cuisine sri lankaise vegetarienne. Carla nous a commandé un 4x4 pour faire un safari avec un spécialiste du parc et son fils pour nous traduire ! Une belle découverte ! Merci pour votre accueil chaleureux :)
Wonderful 2 nights at Gem River for my family of 4! It’s a peaceful, rustic eco lodge with freshly made organic vegetarian meals. The owner was our full day safari guide where we saw amazing wildlife.
